At the disposal of the Ionian Islands Region is the first part of the study of investigation and monitoring of atmospheric quality through specialized chemical analyzes, carried out by the “Demokritos” Institute in the wider area of Lixouri and Argostoli, after the fire at the landfill in Kefalonia , on September 5, 2020 and after the initiative of P.Ι.Ν. to ensure public health.
According to the study and its first conclusions, as communicated to the Deputy Regional Minister of Energy, Environment and Spatial Planning, Spyros Ioannou , by the head of the Laboratory of Mass Spectrometry and Dioxin Analysis of the European Reference Laboratory NCSR. “Demokritos”, Leontio Leontiadis , there is no issue for public health, as the values in the measurements made of air pollutants, are – in some cases – either similar to those measured in rural areas away from urban activities, or similar those detected in the center of Athens.
The highest values of chemical pollutants were detected in the areas of Ag. Dimitrios and Atheras, located west southwest of the landfill. Respectively, the prices of chemical pollutants in the areas of Angonas and Petrikata were at low levels.
The measurements do not cause concern for public health and therefore there were no suggestions from “Demokritos”, in the document sent to the Deputy Regional Minister of Energy, Environment and Spatial Planning, Spyros Ioannou , for actions required by P.IN.
According to the information of “Demokritos”, moreover, two samples of olive oil from the wider area have been analyzed for dioxins and polychlorinated biphenyls, the concentrations of which were found at normal levels in accordance with Regulation 1259/2011 / EU of the European Commission.
The Deputy Regional Minister of Agricultural Economy, Sotiris Kouris , underlined that in the framework of the cooperation with the “Demokritos” Institute , a collection of samples of plant and animal origin (olive oil, milk and meat) and groundwater from the affected areas (Paliki, ), according to the program contract of P.I.N. with the European Reference Laboratory NCSR. “Democritus”.
This project will be undertaken by executives of the Directorate of Agricultural Economy and Veterinary Medicine of P.E. Of Kefallinia.
It is noted that the P.I.N. is waiting for the corresponding study by “Demokritos” for the wider area of the landfill. Temploniou , in Corfu, as well as for this case, the Regional Authority took the initiative to conclude a program contract with the European Reference Laboratory NCSR. “Democritus”.
The results of the second phase of the study are expected soon for Kefalonia (samples of plant and animal origin and groundwater)
