Tonight, Monday, we have the Full Moon of August or otherwise Sturgeon Moon and Crescent Moon.
It is considered the largest and most beautiful full moon of the year, while the next one falls on September 2.
But why is the Full Moon of August also known as the Sturgeon Moon? This is because it has received this name from the Native Americans. To be precise in antiquity, peoples did not divide time into months, but based on the Full Moons.
Thus, the Full Moon of Augustus was named the Sturgeon Moon, because at that time the Native Americans were fishing for this particular fish, also known as Moruna.
Every year the Ministry of Culture usually organizes on this day the so-called events of the August full moon, offering enchanting visits with free entrance to archeological sites and museums, unfortunately this year due to covid they have been much reduced and there are none in Kefalonia.
