Ilia, Zakynthos, Kefalonia and Ithaca are declared in a state of emergency, as announced by the Deputy Minister of Civil Protection and Crisis Management Nikos Hardalias, due to the bad weather “Ianos”.

Mr. Hardalias stated that “the regional units of Ilia, Achaia, Etoloakarnania, Messinia, Ithaca, Kefalonia and Zakynthos have already been put in a state of emergency. By nightfall we will have the image of Corinth and Attica , the second wave of the storm “.

It is noted that “a situation of special mobilization of civil protection”, as Mr. Hardalias said, is provided by the new law in case of threatened serious danger. According to him, the whole mechanism is on standby, it is a difficult situation, it is a phenomenon with special elements.

Mr. Hardalias then repeated the three basic instructions issued by the General Secretariat for Civil Protection to the citizens.

It is reported that the Deputy Minister of Protection and Crisis Management had convened a wide-ranging meeting at the Civil Protection Operations Center (Faros building), so that there is continuous coordination of all Civil Protection bodies involved, in view of the extreme weather phenomenon.

In the meantime, the authorities have been put on alert on the occasion of the bad weather “Ianos”, which is approaching from the west of the country.

At the same time, at the local level in areas in the west of the country, which are the first to be affected by the passage of bad weather, special measures are taken, with interruptions on ferry lines and suspension of schools.

Bad weather “Ianos”: Shipping lines are closing
In particular, the ships operating the routes Kefalonia-Kyllini and Ithaca-Sami-Patra will remain moored in the ports today 17/9, due to the stormy winds that blow in the area.

According to an announcement of the shipping company “Levante Ferries” “for the itineraries, tomorrow 18/09, there will be a new announcement of the company”.

Earlier, it became known that the Zakynthos- Kyllini ferry line was closed due to the extreme weather phenomena caused by the “Ianos” bad weather in the Ionian region.

The open winds of Zakynthos reach up to 8-9 Beaufort, which makes it impossible for ships to depart from the ports of Zakynthos and Kyllini.

Schools are closing due to bad weather
At the same time, the schools of Zakynthos of all levels of education will remain closed tomorrow, Friday 18/9, by decision of the mayor of Zakynthos Nikitas Aretakis, but also the schools of Kefalonia and Ithaca by decision of the deputy governor Stavros Travlos.

All primary and secondary schools in the regional unit of Ilia will remain closed tomorrow , according to a decision of the deputy regional governor, Vassilis Giannopoulos. According to the vice-governor, the decision was taken for the safety of the students, after the meteorological forecasts for an impending event of particularly severe weather phenomena.

The bad weather “Ianos” brings a Mediterranean Cyclone to Greece and has already signaled an alarm to the Civil Protection. According to the estimates of experts and meteorologists, the bad weather “Ianos” will hit Zakynthos, Kefalonia, Ithaca, Messinia, Ilia, Achaia, Argolida, Arcadia, Boeotia, Etoloakarnania Fokida, Evia and Attica.
