During the last week of May, the sea surface temperature dropped to five degrees Celsius in several areas of Greece, after the heatwave that occurred between 17-22 May.

According to the meteo of the National Observatory of Athens, the largest decrease in sea temperature is observed south of Rhodes, Crete and in the Ionian west of the Peloponnese.

On May 20, the sea surface temperature exceeded 25 degrees Celsius locally in the Dodecanese and the Libyan Sea, while ten days later on May 30 it did not exceed 20-21 degrees, about one to two degrees below normal for the season.

This is one of the largest changes in the surface temperature of the sea in such a short time during the last at least 20 years in our country.

The phenomenon is explained both by the extreme heat conditions that preceded it, and by the weather conditions that followed, with the prolonged low temperatures for the season.

The weather on Monday

On Monday, according to the meteo, local rains and sporadic thunderstorms are expected. The temperature will not change significantly, while winds of up to six Beaufort will blow in the seas.

More specifically, local rains and sporadic thunderstorms are expected until the morning in the Eastern Aegean, Eastern Macedonia, Thrace and the western mainland, which from the morning will gradually expand to the rest of the mainland, Crete and the Southeastern Aegean.

Visibility during the night will be locally limited and dust concentrations in the southeast will be relatively high.

Temperatures in Western Macedonia will range from 7 to 17 degrees Celsius, in the rest of Macedonia and Thrace from 10 to 23, in the rest of the mainland from 12 to 25, in the Ionian Islands from 14 to 22, in the Aegean islands from 15 to 23 and in Crete from 12 to 24.

Winds in the Eastern and Southeastern Aegean will blow from south 3 to 5 Beaufort. In the rest of the Aegean, the winds will blow from west 3 to 5 and locally up to 6 Beaufort.

In the Ionian the winds will blow from northwest directions 3 to 5 and from the afternoon 4 to 6 Beaufort.

In Attica, local rains and possibly sporadic thunderstorms are expected from noon. The winds will blow from north to northwest up to 3 and locally up to 4 Beaufort, but at noon and in the afternoon they will become of the same intensity. The temperature in the center of Athens will range from 16 to 23 degrees Celsius.

Local rains and possibly sporadic thunderstorms are expected in Thessaloniki from noon. The winds will blow from north to northwest 3 to 5 beauforts, but in the afternoon they will be temporarily changing to 3 beauforts. The temperature in the city center will range from 15 to 23 degrees.
